Retreat Diaries

About

Retreat websites tell you what a retreat offers. Retreat Diaries is about what it was like.

What this is

A growing library of real, first-person accounts of meditation retreats, tagged so you can find the kind you are curious about: by center, tradition, length, and what happened. Some people are bored. Some have a breakthrough. Some have a rough patch. Most have a bit of each.

How we handle stories

The "how it went" dots

One to five dots reflect our reading of how the author themselves felt about the retreat overall. 1 means very hard or harmful, 3 means mixed, 5 means very positive. It is a quick guide, not a review of the center or the tradition, and it is subjective.

Not medical advice. This site is not medical or mental health advice. Long silent retreats can be intense and are not right for everyone. If you have a history of trauma, psychosis, bipolar disorder, severe anxiety or similar, speak with a qualified professional and the retreat's teachers first. A few entries here describe frightening experiences, and they are included on purpose so you can go in informed.

Corrections and removals

If you are an author listed here and would like a summary changed or removed, a contact route is coming soon (see the Add your story page). Until then, the original author always keeps all rights to their work.

Funding

In future the site may earn money from clearly marked featured center listings and affiliate links. Stories will never be paid placements and featured listings will always be labeled.
